NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – While a well-developed contactless card and POS terminal infrastructure and strong consumer take-up of contactless card payments has often been touted as the gateway to use of mobile payments, that is often not the case. Take Canada, for instance.
Just 4% of Canadian cardholders have used Android Pay since its spring 2017 launch in Canada, according to a new survey by market research firm Ipsos, which said take-up of the other two major “Pays” wallets, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, also remains in the single digits, although the firm has not yet released those figures.
By contrast, nearly half of Canadian cardholders made a contactless card transaction in the first half of 2017, and 84% of Canadian consumers are aware of the card technology, according to Ipsos’ Personal Cardholder Study.
