NFC Times Exclusive – While the NFC industry saw a breakthrough in 2014 with the launch of Apple Pay, the year also was marked by a number of disappointments and missed opportunities.
With this story, NFC Times inaugurates a new annual feature, recording the biggest misses of the year for NFC–the expected rollouts that didn’t happen, the budding trends that proved premature, the hype that went a little too far. (See table below).
Among the key disappointments of 2014 was the slow start for much-anticipated host-card emulation rollouts, the dormancy of Samsung’s embedded chip program, delays or weak commercialization for expected national rollouts by telcos or banks in China, France, Spain, the UK and Germany and three missed deadlines by Russia’s largest bank for its promised launches of payments with both embedded chips and HCE.
