About 500 customers of Bank Zachodni WBK and mobile operator Polkomtel will be able to make low-value purchases in three cities by tapping their Samsung NFC phones with a Visa payWave debit application stored in SIM cards. The bank will be able to manage the application over the air on the SIMs.
The trial is the first NFC payment pilot announced in Poland, where banks are rolling out Visa payWave contactless cards this year. Telco PTC and Internet bank Inteligo launched a smaller NFC trial shortly after the Polkomtel/BZ WBK announcement. BZ WBK issued its first payWave cards in fall 2008 and has about 150,000 on issue. All told, Visa expects more than 2 million payWave cards on issue by the end of the year in Poland, with big PKO Bank Polski planning to begin adding payWave to more than 6 million Visa debit cards. Polkomtel, Poland's largest mobile operator, said it has been considering a commercial NFC launch, but noted in a Visa press release there are few NFC phones available.
